Side effect details
Here’s some detail on certain side effects this drug may cause. In addition to the information below, you can also refer to this in-depth article about Wegovy’s side effects.
Risk of thyroid cancer
Wegovy has a boxed warning about the possible risk of thyroid cancer. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from the FDA. It alerts doctors and patients about drug effects that may be dangerous.
Animal studies found an increased risk of thyroid cancer in rats that were given Wegovy. But animal studies don’t always predict what will happen in humans. It is not known for sure if Wegovy increases the risk of thyroid cancer in humans.
If you or a family member has a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), your doctor will not prescribe Wegovy for you. MTC is a rare type of thyroid cancer. Your doctor also won’t prescribe Wegovy if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). MEN2 is a rare genetic (inherited) condition that can cause thyroid cancer.
Symptoms of thyroid cancer can include:
- lump in your neck
- trouble breathing, speaking, or swallowing
- hoarse voice
Tell your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of thyroid cancer. They can advise on the cause of these symptoms and recommend treatment options for your condition.

Symptoms of pancreatitis can include:
- pain in the center of the abdomen, which may get worse after eating
- nausea or vomiting
- diarrhea
- loss of appetite
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of pancreatitis while taking Wegovy. They’ll check you for this condition. If you have pancreatitis, they’ll likely prescribe a drug other than Wegovy for you.
Gallbladder problems
Gallbladder problems, such as gallstones (lumps in the gallbladder) and inflammation of the gallbladder, are rare but serious side effects of Wegovy. In clinical trials, this type of side effect was more common in children using Wegovy than in adults.
Symptoms of gallstones or gallbladder inflammation may include:
- abdominal pain
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
- loss of appetite
- nausea and vomiting
- dark urine
If you have symptoms of gallbladder problems while taking Wegovy, talk with your doctor. They’ll give you tests to check for this condition. Your doctor can advise if it’s safe for you to keep taking Wegovy.
Allergic reactionAs with most drugs, some people can have an allergic reaction after taking Wegovy. This side effect wasn’t reported in Wegovy’s clinical trials. But allergic reaction has been reported in people taking the drug after it became available on the market.

The following information describes dosages that are commonly used or recommended. But be sure to take the dosage your doctor prescribes for you. Your doctor will determine the best dosage to fit your needs.
Drug form and strengths
Wegovy comes as a liquid solution inside a prefilled, single-dose injection pen.
Wegovy comes in several strengths:
- 0.25 milligrams per 0.5 milliliters of liquid solution (0.25 mg/0.5 mL)
- 0.5 mg/0.5 mL
- 1 mg/0.5 mL
- 1.7 mg/0.75 mL
- 2.4 mg/0.75 mL
Each Wegovy pen delivers only one dose of the drug. You’ll use a new Wegovy pen for each dose.
Dosage for weight loss and weight management
The usual starting dose of Wegovy for weight loss is 0.25 mg. You’ll inject this dose once per week for 4 weeks.
Then, your doctor will likely increase your dosage every 4 weeks as follows:
- 0.5 mg once per week during weeks 5 through 8
- 1 mg once per week during weeks 9 through 12
- 1.7 mg once per week during weeks 13 through 16
At week 17 and onward, you’ll start your maintenance (ongoing) dosage of 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg per week. The maintenance dosage your doctor prescribes will depend on how effective Wegovy treatment is for you and how your body responds to the drug, such as whether you’re having side effects.
You’ll likely continue your maintenance dosage long term, according to your doctor’s instructions.
For more information about Wegovy’s dosage, you can refer to this article.
Children’s dosage
The usual starting dosages of Wegovy in children ages 12 years and older are the same as the dosages used in adults, which are described just above.
The usual maintenance (ongoing) dosage of Wegovy in children is 2.4 mg per week.
What if I miss a dose?
What to do if you miss a dose of Wegovy depends on a few factors:
- If you miss one dose of Wegovy and your next dose is more than 48 hours away, take your missed dose as soon as you remember.
- If you miss one dose of Wegovy and your next dose is less than 48 hours away, skip your missed dose. Then take your next dose according to your usual schedule.
- If you miss two or more doses of Wegovy in a row, talk with your doctor. They may need to adjust your dosage temporarily.
If you aren’t sure whether to take a missed dose of Wegovy or to skip it, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
To help make sure that you don’t miss a dose, try using a medication reminder. This can include setting an alarm or using a timer. You could also download a reminder app on your phone.
Will I need to use this drug long term?
Yes, Wegovy may be used as a long-term treatment. If you and your doctor determine that Wegovy is safe and effective for you, you’ll likely use it long term.
You should use Wegovy according to the instructions your doctor gives you.
Wegovy comes as a liquid inside a prefilled, single-dose injection pen. It’s typically given as a subcutaneous injection (an injection under the skin) into your abdomen, upper arm, or thigh.
Your doctor or another healthcare professional will show you how to give yourself Wegovy injections at home. For more Wegovy instructions, you can visit the drug manufacturer’s website. Or you can read these detailed instructions.
When to inject
You’ll self-inject a dose of Wegovy once a week on the same day each week. For example, you might inject the drug every Monday. You can inject Wegovy at any time of day.
To help make sure that you don’t miss a dose, try using a medication reminder. This can include setting an alarm or using a timer. You could also download a reminder app on your phone.
Wegovy and food
You can use Wegovy with or without food.
Wegovy belongs to a group of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists. The drug mimics the activity of GLP-1, a natural hormone in the body.
GLP-1 works in your brain to regulate your appetite. The drug mimics GLP-1, which helps lessen your appetite and food intake. This can lead to weight loss. Wegovy is approved for long-term weight loss and weight management in certain adults.
How long does it take to work?
Wegovy starts working right after you inject your first dose. But it may take several weeks for you to notice a decrease in appetite or weight loss.
There aren’t any known interactions between Wegovy and alcohol.
If you drink alcohol, talk with your doctor about how much is safe for you to drink during Wegovy treatment.
Wegovy can interact with several other medications.
Different interactions can cause different effects. For instance, some interactions can interfere with how well a drug works. Other interactions can increase side effects or make them more severe.
Note: In addition to the information below, you can also refer to this in-depth article about Wegovy’s interactions.
Wegovy and other medications
Below is a list of medications that can interact with Wegovy. This list does not contain all drugs that may interact with Wegovy.
Before taking Wegovy, talk with your doctor and pharmacist. Tell them about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use. Sharing this information can help you avoid potential interactions.
Drugs that can interact with Wegovy include:
- Insulin. These medications are used to treat diabetes. Taking Wegovy with insulin can raise your risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Examples of these drugs include:
- insulin degludec (Tresiba)

It’s recommended to stop Wegovy treatment at least 2 months before trying to become pregnant.
Wegovy hasn’t been studied in people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. But in animal studies, the drug caused fetal harm and congenital anomalies (commonly known as birth defects) when given to pregnant animals. Wegovy also passed into the breast milk of lactating animals, meaning the drug could possibly pass to a child who is breastfed. However, animal studies do not always predict what will happen in humans.
If you become pregnant while you’re using Wegovy, you could participate in the drug’s pregnancy registry. Pregnancy registries gather information about how certain drugs can affect pregnancy. For details, you can talk with your doctor, visit the registry website, and call 877-390-2760.
If you’re able to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning on either, talk with your doctor before using this medication.
